2024 was rich in collaborations with various AdTech communities, pushing innovation and delivering data-driven advertising solutions across the industry. This year is no exception—TeqBlaze continues its joint work within the Prebid community. The biggest independent AdTech community, Prebid provides scalable open-source header bidding solutions, offering publishers more control over their ad inventory. A cause we believe in as well, TeqBlaze actively contributes to pushing that industry standard, simplifying publishers’ and AdTech companies' work with Prebid.

Before, the Prebid SDK lacked native support for rewarded ads. While OpenRTB Version 2.6 improved certain features (like event tracking and signaling), its full implementation within the Prebid mobile SDK required additional development.

Taking the demand for lucrative in-app monetization without disrupting the user experience into account, we suggested adding a new format, expanding its functionality, and ensuring seamless rewarded video integration. From now on, the Prebid mobile SDK supports SDK-rewarded video format, enhancing user engagement and significantly boosting revenue for publishers.

Integrating SDK-rewarded video with Prebid

Before, RewardedAdUnit implementation was constrained by the general-purpose Interstitial Ad behavior, preventing the configuration of both the Reward object and the UX.

Based on market research, the TeqBlaze team featuring Olga Zharuk (CPO) and Vladislav Isaiko (CTO) implemented the Rewarded Ad Unit, maintaining its existing behavior while expanding its capabilities. The new feature enables multiple Prebid-compatible demand sources to compete in a fair, transparent auction, allowing publishers to maximize fill rates. While the Prebid SDK facilitates bid routing, GAM handles the final ad rendering.

Now, publishers can seamlessly integrate rewarded video ads into their mobile apps for both iOS and Android, expanding monetization opportunities across their inventory.

For iOS

To implement rewarded video ads on iOS using the Prebid SDK, developers should utilize the RewardedVideoAdUnitclass. This class facilitates bid requests to the Prebid Server and supplies targeting keywords to the Google Mobile Ads (GMA) SDK. The integration involves creating a RewardedVideoAdUnit with a specific configuration ID, setting up video parameters (such as MIME types and playback methods), and making bid requests to the Prebid Server. Once a bid is obtained, the Prebid SDK sends targeting parameters to the GMA SDK, which then calls and renders the rewarded ad based on the highest bid.

For Android

Android developers can integrate rewarded video ads by employing the RewardedVideoAdUnit class provided by the Prebid SDK. The process mirrors that of iOS: initializing the ad unit with a configuration ID, defining video parameters, and making bid requests to the Prebid Server. In other words, both platforms use the same bid request workflow via the Prebid SDK. Once a bid is obtained, the app can request the ad from Google Ad Manager (GAM) and display it to users at appropriate times within the app's flow.

How the Prebid SDK for rewarded video ads changes the game

Prebid now allows publishers to enable fair, transparent header bidding, where Prebid-supported demand sources vie for rewarded video placements. This ensures optimized revenue, provided the demand partners are integrated with Prebid.

Publishers also gain visibility into bidding activity, allowing them to analyze demand sources, bid values, and performance trends. The Prebid SDK supports various ad formats beyond rewarded videos, including interstitials and banners, allowing publishers to diversify their monetization strategies.

The addition of rewarded video support in the Prebid SDK marks a significant step forward for mobile app monetization. Enabling fair and transparent header bidding, it allows publishers to maximize revenue across multiple video ad formats, including rewarded video, interstitials, and native video ads. With its flexible integration for both iOS and Android, publishers can easily implement rewarded video ads into their mobile applications, delivering high-quality, engaging video ads with efficient tracking, measurement, and optimization.
